Hurricane Season: Year-Round Planning Ensures We’re Prepared and Ready to Respond

June 19, 2026

Hurricane season brings the potential for severe weather events, and making sure we’re prepared and ready is a year-round priority. Mosaic maintains a comprehensive preparedness and response plan that establishes clear guidelines for monitoring and responding to hurricanes and other severe weather events. Each site also has a detailed Hurricane/Severe Weather Plan that outlines specific actions to protect people, reduce risks, secure assets and guide recovery efforts.

“Preparation drives everything we do,” explained Tom Wind, Director, Health & Safety – North America. “From protecting people and the environmental to supporting our communities and reducing risks to our operations – we are ready to quickly and safely respond before, during and after a storm.”

Incident Command System (ICS)

Our preparedness and response plans are supported by the Incident Command System (ICS), a standardized management structure designed to enable effective and efficient incident response. ICS integrates facilities, equipment, personnel, procedures and communications within a common organizational framework and includes five major functional areas: Command, Operations, Planning, Logistics and Finance/Administration.

ICS teams at Mosaic facilities support site-level preparedness and response, and a North America-wide ICS team is ready to activate as needed to provide additional coordination, communications and resources during significant weather events.

Our Priority Protocol: People, Property, Production

Everything we do before, during and after a storm is guided by Mosaic’s priority protocol: People first, then property, then production.

This protocol ensures safety remains at the forefront of every decision, while also supporting responsible operations and long-term recovery.

Before

Preparations for hurricane season include reviewing lessons learned from the previous year, updating our preparedness and response plans, conducting ICS drills, and completing inspections to ensure all test pumps, generators and other equipment needed in the event of severe weather are onsite and in proper working order.

During

The severity of the weather and location/distance from the site determines the condition under which the site operates. Incident Command Systems for our North America business and at our sites are in place and ready for activation as needed to guide and coordinate our response.

Sites coordinate with local governmental Emergency Operations Center personnel and other state and federal regulatory agencies throughout the weather event. We follow contingency plans for excessive rainfall and water inventory management for the continued protection of our communities and the environment.

After

Following a severe weather event, an assessment is completed that guides our recovery strategy from any storm-related impacts and directs resources to help ensure continued safe, responsible operations or startup following the weather event at the sites. We also provide support to impacted employees and local communities.

Supporting Each Other and Our Communities

Supporting employees and neighbors is a critical part of Mosaic’s hurricane preparedness and response efforts. In addition to providing assistance after a storm, Mosaic invests in preparedness well before hurricane season begins.

Early support enables community organizations to strengthen readiness and deliver timely relief if a storm occurs. Mosaic partners with organizations that play a vital role in preparedness, response and recovery efforts.

“As hurricane season approaches each year, we’re reminded of the importance of preparation — at home, at our sites, and across our communities,” said Heather Nedley, Director, Government and Public Affairs – Mosaic. “By planning ahead and working closely with our partners, we can help ensure support is available when it’s needed most.”

Mosaic employees pitched in to help with recovery efforts after Hurricane Milton in 2024 by hosting food drives, helping collect and distribute supplies, and cleaning up storm debris.
